The role
Inside the Building, Every Day.
Performance Analysts sit between the staff and the data. They translate event, tracking and GPS data into pre-match opposition plans, in-match adjustments, post-match debriefs and training-load reviews.
Most are embedded inside a single club. The strongest also write code, build feature pipelines and own small ML models for their analyst team - the line between Performance Analyst and Data Scientist has blurred substantially.
What hasn't changed: this is a job done in the building, alongside coaches. Cultural fit and the ability to read a room matter as much as the analytical work.

Performance Analyst hiring is high-stakes because the role is high-trust. We assess against three pillars.
Analytical depth
- Strong working knowledge of Hudl, Sportscode, Wyscout, InStat or equivalents
- SQL or Python for working with event and tracking data
- Comfort with custom video taxonomies and tagging workflows
- Increasingly: ability to build small ML models or feature pipelines
Dressing-room fit
- Genuine sport literacy - typically football, increasingly other elite sports
- Ability to earn the trust of coaches, players and performance staff
- Comfort working under pressure on a matchday timeline
Output speed
- Pre-match reports turned around to a deadline
- Quick iteration on coach feedback
- Strong written and visual presentation
